For a long time, it was tough to get home video versions in widescreen at all, so the fact that the younger generation now sees the 4:3 versions as a novelty and kind of likes the look is quite ironic. The widescreen theatrical version of a movie was usually what best reflected the filmmaker's intent. Still, the majority of filmmakers saw the non-theatrical 4:3 version as an afterthought at best. (So they weren't really 'pan and scan' at all.)

For big movies made around this time, though, usually a little more care was taken in shooting and open matte shots were used to ensure compositions still looked good, so in some cases you get shots with more image included at the tops and bottoms, rather than less on the side. In some cases, they were created quite haphazardly by cutting off the sides of the frame just to fit a tv. The quality of these versions could vary pretty wildly.

It was a special version of the movie made for VHS and DVD to fit 4:3 televisions, which were typical at the time. It looks like this is what used to be known as pan-and-scan full screen.
